Yorkshire, Penistone, England.
Dear Brothers and Sisters:
I received your letter on the 15th of October dated Aug. 30, 1849, and
am glad you have made up your mind to come to America. I think it is the
best move you ever made. Try to get William and family to come with you.
It is a foolish idea that there is no place like Old England. I can tell
by what a man can do here - by what I see others do and by what I have
done. I have 160 acres of land. Would I have had them in England? No.
If I had lived to be a hundred there I would not have one acre to call
my own. Bring seeds; garden and grass seeds of all kinds. Any and all
seeds will be useful here. Bring me a pair of sheep-shears of the
Woodland pattern, Sorby make, Sheffield. As to clothing lay in a good
stock - all but shoes - they are cheaper here. Do not bring gear for
horses - all are different here. Get strong plain boxes for your clothes
and provisions, with locks. Lay in provisions to last six weeks - tea,
sugar, coffee, treacle, flour, oatmeal, bacon, ham, potatoes, if
possible, a plenty of preserves and eggs which are as good as anything
on the sea. Don't buy sea-biscuits, few people like them. Get a little
brandy, cheese and butter and some medicine to take, if necessary. The
Government allows one pound of bread stuff for each passenger per day -
see that you get it.
Take your fare in steerage and in a good ship. Do not be in a hurry but
see for yourself that the ship is a good one. Take fare from Liverpool
to New York. From New York make a new bargin at each place you stop:
steamboat to Albany; Erie canel to Buffalo; steamboat to Milwaukee.
Leave your family there and come out here. I will get them. Get all your
money in sovereigns as they are worth more here than silver. Always
reckon by the cents then you will not be cheated.
Bromley wants you to bring him a single barrel gun. You must start
sometime in March - don't stay later than the first of April.
