• Note*: According to information contained in his obituary, Jacob was born in Neurhoren Brunen, near Mainz, on the River Rhine, Germany on 4 July 1838. In 1854, at the age of 16, he came to the United States to escape the rigors of compulsory military education. After studying English in New York for a while, he moved to Warren County, Georgia, where he lived with three of his first cousins: Andrew Rocker, William Rocker, and Charles Rocker. These three were brothers, and with our Jacob Rocker, were listed in the same household in the 1860 census of Warren County, Georgia. Each listed his occupation as vine dresser and gave his place of birth as Hessendarmstadt.
  
  Although Jacob had left Germany to escape compulsory military service, he did volunteer for the Confederate Army in 1861 and served throughout the war under General Joseph E. Johnson, in Company D, 5th Regiment Georgia Infantry, Warren County. He was in the battles of Shiloh, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta, and Gettysburg.
  
  After the war, Jacob returned to civilian life and married Sarah Frances (Fannie) Gunn on 12 April 1866. In August 1866, Jacob Rocker joined Salem Baptist Church in Barnett, Georgia, and remained a member there until he and his family moved by covered wagon to Bulloch County, Georgia in 1898. The move took three days. Jacob then transferred his church membership to Poplar Springs Baptist Church and was a member there until his death.
  
  Jacob was chosen to deliver the main speech at the dedication of the Confederate Memorial on the Bulloch County courthouse square in 1909. The speech was printed in the 'The Christian Liberator,' Nov. 18, 1919, Glennville, GA. Part of the speech is reprinted in 'The Spirit of a People', the bicentennial book for Bulloch County's 200th birthday in 1996.
  
  Jacob died 21 October 1919 in Bulloch County, Georgia. Both he and his wife, Fannie, are buried in Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Jacob being buried with Masonic honors on 22 October 1919.
