Dad was a self made man and never let protocol stand in his way. He had
a unique view of life.
He built a small pond stocked with fish and rigged a large net to the
front of his Jeep which would fill with insects when he drove through a
hay field. This was a gormet delight for the fish. The neighbors really
got a laugh out of this when they finally figured out what he was
doing.
Dad was a distributor for DuPont explosives and had a specially
contructed concrete bunker type building for storing the dynamite. Once
moisture got into his storage building and ruined severaL boxes. The
paper shell of the sticks got wet and unwrapped. One afternoon, while no
one was home, he decided he had better destroy the remanents so he made
a neat pile of the mess and prepared a fuse and detonating cap which he
though would just flash as opposed to an explosion. Didn't work that
way, there was a large explosion which blew all of the windows out of
the east side of the house. He carefully removed all the glass
fragments before anyone came home. During the cool summer night, mother
started complaining about how cool the house was becoming. When she
checked the bedroom window, she found the glass had been removed, not
only in that window but several others. Dad finally fessed up.
Dad use to delight in laying out in the hammock on a hot summer day - in
just his underware - gave the people driving by something to talk
about. After I got over the embarassment, I have to admit how much I
admired his rebel attitude towards convention. - Birth*: 2 July 1899; Mt Carroll, Carroll, IL
