• Note*: Died of a gunshot wound when he was 21 years old. The official record contends that, while working on a dairy farm in Moultrie, GA, he accidentally shot himself with a pistol as he was opening a door. Other accounts of this story hawever, indicate that he was murdered by moonshiners after discovering their still.

• Note*: Essie was considered by her siblings as the most talented. She could play the piano in the dark; she also played for her church. She and her brother, Claude, composed a popular song and submitted it for publication. The song was rejected becaused it 'sounded to much like a hymn.' Quite a seamstress, she was known to make clothes without a pattern. She died 3 months after the birth of her only child, Betty Ruth Webb. Sometime later, Betty Ruth's father, Perry Webb, married the nurse who attended Betty's birth.
